Our Story
"Don't spend another penny on this house. Tear it
down and replace it with a modular." Tough to hear
when you are only a few months from being debt
free, but those were the words out of the contractor's
mouth.
Unfortunately, the events that set that moment in
motion began some 30 years prior. My father made
our kitchen bigger by taking out the wall between the
outside entrance to the basement and the kitchen.
He replaced the door with a heavy trap door in the
floor.
At the time no big deal. He was around to lift that
heavy trap door. He was around to fix things, but it
wasn't long and death would come to call him home.
Not to worry he left behind a football playing son. The
trap door was no problem for the son. Five years and
two weeks later the son was killed in a motorcycle
accident.
Now you had a single working mother of a college
age daughter who had lost both her husband and
son in a very short time. You also had a college age
daughter working full time and going to school full
time who had just lost her father and brother.
Both women making decisions from a broken heart.

What is Feng Shui:
American Style?
Traditional Chinese Feng Shui believes that
everything is alive and imbued with Chi the
Universal Life Force. The Chi of everything
around us impacts our personal Chi. Much like
acupuncture it opens the paths in our homes
and allows the chi to flow smoothly through our
homes nurturing and supporting us.
Many of us as American, especially those of us
raised in the heavily Christian influenced Bible
Belt have a difficult time with the concept of Chi.
However all of us can relate to the frustrations of
a disorganized junk drawer that holds the exact
screw driver we need at this moment. Or how
about the frustration of road construction on
multiple roads. You take a shortcut around the
road construction only to need a shortcut around
the shortcut. Having our path blocked or our
environment out of balance frustrates us and
robs us of our vital energy.
Some everyday examples:
A Displaced Store.
I wanted to spend my money at a particular store
because I knew they had been forced to relocate
due to eminate domain.
I found the store easily given the directions I
had, but once I was there I couldn't figure out
how to get in.
The landscaping was a touch too high so that I
didn't have a clear view of the entire strip mall. In
front of the main approach to my intended
destination was a parking spot with one of those
cement parking space markers I didn't know if
that meant they wanted me to come to another
entrance.
Had I not wanted to give my money to that
particular store I probably would have just gone
somewhere else.
Then I reminded myself that this was exactly the
reason I was studying Feng Shui to help home
owners and business owners fix these little
bumps.
Anyway as I was in the store I overheard another
customer telling the store owner that his
competitor was cheaper but she liked him
better. So she had made the decision to buy
from him.
It was clear that he was very good at his
business, it was just the outside of his building
that was saying no to customers.
Have a seat.
The other day I realized that I always stand when
I am in the living room of a friend. I could sit for
hours and talk around the kitchen table or on the
deck. It is just the living room that keeps me
standing. Weird!
As I took the time to analyze the situation I
realized that the situation wasn't really weird at
all. In fact in made perfect sense.
As you walk in the door the ceiling just inside the
door is lower than the ceiling a few feet farther
into the room. This naturally draws me farther
into the room, but the sectional where my
friends sit is just inside the door with a table in
front of it.
The chair across the room where the higher
ceiling is is to far away for a good talk.
Therefore I stand when I am in that room. The
higher ceiling is calling me forward but the
couch is anchoring me in place.
